Senate Legislation, A Guide

The SGA Senate functions similarly to the United States Senate. Elected Senators will present and vote on legislation presented by their fellow colleagues. Legislation may take the form of Bills, Resolutions, or Constitutional Amendments. All passed legislation will be reviewed by MSMS administration.

Senate Bills

Senate Bills are legislation that seek to change or establish MSMS customs. Most commonly, these amend MSMS Handbook rules. Senate Bills are marked as SB on bill documents and are numbered in order of presentation, restarting each month.

Senate Resolutions

Senate Resolutions are resolutions that establish an opinion, commitment, or change of procedures. Senate Resolutions are marked as SR on resolution documents and are numbered in order of presentation, restarting each month.

Constitutional Amendment

Constitutional Amendments are amendments to the SGA Constitution, similar to the US Constitution. Constitutional Amendments are marked as CA on amendment documents and are numbered in order of presentation, restarting each month.

Colored Text

Legislation may have colored text. Red marks changes made to a referenced piece of standing writing (ie. the Handbook). Blue marks amendments made to the legislation during debate. Other colors are rarely used, but typically indicate new amendments to the legislation in a separate session of debate.

A Note

While we try to maintain consistency throughout legislation, we are human, and mistakes may slip through.
